About Homeopathy

Homeopathy

For the explanation of the term homoeopathy, we need to refer to the Latin language and to history. The word homoeopathy is a contraction of two Greek words: homoios (similar) and pothos (suffer). This refers to the therapy form. The therapy uses healing impulses that would result in the same clinical pictures for both healthy and sick people.

It is a denomination that has been used by Hahnemann and that is still in use, also in traditional medical science. The term for the counterpart of homoeopathy is allopathy (allos means: of a different kind).

The most important difference between the two theories can be explained by an example: the treatment of burns. The allopathic treatment advises to use something cold, while the homoeopathic treatment would use something as warm as possible. The most instant relief is obtained by using something cold, but on the long term the body will respond better to as warm as possible. What are the most important principles of classic homoeopathy?

The similarity principle:
Many things (for example plants, but also minerals like sulfur, gold and mercury) cause certain symptoms of sickness with healthy people. A sickness symptom can be considered a ‘left-over product’ of the inner battle to get healthy. If you would suck on the leaf of a foxglove plant, you would definitely experience some unpleasant sensations of the heart. The amount of toxic substances you take is so large, that the body produces an undermining reaction in order to get better again. This reaction is too strong and might eventually kill you. If this substance would be used in a homoeopathic medicine, it could be the cure for sick people with the same symptoms (unpleasant sensations of the heart). If you would only give a stimulus as subtle as possible, meaning the smallest possible stimulus that causes a healing reaction of the body. The smallest possible stimulus is obtained when this substance is treated ‘homeopathically’. This means that in a special procedure of diluting and shaking, the devastating toxicity is being removed and the healing stimulus is being released.

Individual treatment    What is a homoeopathic medicine?

An important principle is that every human being has a unique case history, both in development as in (allopathic) treatment. As equally important is that every human being is born with his own tendency to diseases. Every human being can also respond differently in his effort to recover. The response can be violent and exuberant, but also fast and destructive, and sometimes there are hardly any symptoms that occur. In many cases the patient asks for help during an acute stage of the disease, but in other cases the patient has no acute symptoms, only a chronic feeling of discomfort. All these aspects require a unique treatment for every patient.

The homoeopathic therapy uses a holistic vision on human. This vision considers every human being as an indissoluble unity of body and soul. The directions for the treatment, the homoeopath is going to use, are based on physical, emotional and mental symptoms. This combined action can be considered the unique reflection of the sick human being.

80% of homoeopathic medicine consists of plants. The other 20% is composed of minerals, animal substances and nosodes This is made into a primordial solvent. This results into a primordial solvent of which a small amount is being diluted with water and powerfully shaken over and over again, to make the final medicine. Because the medicine can only prove it’s potential when it’s tested on healthy human beings, it can be considered the most human-, animal and environmental friendly medicine there is.

Homoeopathic medicines are not poisonous, addictive or suppressive. They also don’t cause harmful side effects.

The homoeopathic medicine gives the right stimulus to one’s vitality, so the self-healing capacity is being stimulated. When this is successful, you will really feel better.

Vitality
A homoeopath assumes that every human being has vitality, self-healing capacities. This is a natural given, because without it, the human race would never have made it this far in history. Someone’s vitality can be under pressure from time to time. The homoeopathist tries to mobilize the vitality that is left and to use it for healing reactions.

Earlier in this article we read the name Hahnemann. He is the founder of the classic homoeopathy. The term ‘classic’ means that there are different kinds of homoeopathy. Clinical homoeopathy does not individualize in the same way as the classic approach. Complex homoeopathy prescribes different homoeopathic remedies in a standardized mix. The classic homoeopathy goes into the matter in a very detailed way. It looks at how you are doing and what you’re doing to feel better. If the symptoms get worse or maybe get better in certain situations. Also important are data about nutrition, temperature-sensitivity, details about sleep, dreaming, and mental performance. In brief: the goal is to obtain a picture of someone’s physical and mental performance in the present and the past.

When the homoeopath has a picture of your illness and your case history, it will result in a treatment plan and you will receive the most appropriate homoeopathic medication for that moment. It may also be necessary for the homoeopath to work on different levels to give an effective incentive for healing. In that case you may have to take different medicines in alteration, but never two or more at the same time. In some cases you will experience immediate relief after taking the medicine. This can be expected when the symptoms are acute. When the illness is chronic, this can process can take more time.

Classic homoeopathy can treat many symptoms, but it’s important to keep the reality in mind. The allopathic medicine can in some cases show wonderful examples of diagnostics or operating skills that give a huge relief of complaints. When there are mechanical causes for a disease, it should be possible to remove them. Allopathic medicine has in some cases very good instruments, knowledge and skills for that. When it’s about treatment, homoeopathy appears to deliver better contributions to recovery than allopathic medicine, which is more based on removing the result of the disease, instead of treating the cause.
